John, a 17-year-old boy, steals his father’s automobile for a late-night joy ride. John’s neighbors, Mr. & Ms. Hinkle, own a farm. John takes his father’s vehicle and drives up and down the corn rows on the Hinkle’s farm. Unbeknownst to John, the Hinkle’s 12-year-old daughter, Sally, snuck out of the house to play in the cornfield. As John drives through the cornfield, he strikes and kills Sally when she steps in front of his vehicle. Should John be charged with involuntary manslaughter or Abandoned Heart murder?
